Many movies from our youth, and even well into our adult lives, capture the essence of our experiences better with great,accompanying music. In the great road trip of our lives (literally and metaphorically), everything is made better with a song to remember it by.
But what makes traveling a unique opportunity to learn music? Plenty of reasons why, actually.
- Full immersion to your surroundings. -Traveling in itself is a deeply personal experience to begin with. You are voluntarily immersing yourself to something, someplace new. Many sights,sounds, and flavors are entirely new, and there's no environment more conducive to learning than a new place where everything else is a blend of something fresh and exciting.
- Exercise and train your mind. - Like most things that we learn, like a new language, cooking, etc., learning how to play music requires your mind to make room for something new. And its all science! A TED-Ed talk explores the benefits of playing music to the brain:
Playing music is the brains equivalent of a full-body workout Playing an instrument engages practically every area of the brain at once especially the visual, auditory,and motor cortices. And, as in any other workout, disciplined, structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions, allowing us to apply that strength to other activities musicians also have higher levels of executive function a category of interlinked tasks that includes planning,strategizing, and attention to detail, and requires simultaneous analysis of both cognitive and emotional aspects. This ability also has an impact on how our memory systems work. And, indeed, musicians exhibit enhanced memory functions creating, storing, and retrieving memories more quickly and efficiently.
- Discover and expand your musical interests. - One of the best things about music is how it is largely intertwined with many forms of creative medium that are embedded into various cultures. That's why when we discover new genres and sounds, to an extent, we also learn about why and how they impact people. There are certain musical styles which primary purpose is for rituals; others are simply forms of entertainment or more culturally significant. Traveling allows us to see the world from another perspective, music included.
- Connect with people. - Whether or not we travel alone, the experience in itself is a social activity, and so is learning how to play music! It involves interaction and connection to navigate melodies and rhythms, much like how we explore new places.
